The European Union is committed to finding new ways of minimising carbon emissions across the continent. The EcoDesign Lot 20 legislation has been put into place to attempt to combat the issue of heat wastage throughout European countries.
Some may be thinking, “What about Brexit”? Well, even though we are planning to leave the European Union in 2019, the UK has already signed up for this directive – so it will be coming into play, regardless of our political situation.
EcoDesign Lot 20 (which is often abbreviated to just ‘Lot 20’) is summarised here:
“All local space heaters manufactured for sale in the EU after 1st January 2018 which use electricity, gaseous or liquid fuels, must comply with a minimum efficiency standard. This includes electric radiators, electric underfloor heating and electric and gas fires.”
This means that, to make sure that heating products are as energy-efficient as possible, every appliance that provides heat to indoor spaces (as defined by the directive) will need to contain intelligent controls.
The key features of intelligent controls are as follows:
- Timer Control – this allows you to switch the heater on and off according to your requirements. The Timer may be adjusted through an internal programmer or via a smartphone app (as long as you are connected to WiFi).
- Thermostatic Control – this provides you with an accurate reading of your room temperature via an electronic thermostat.
- Smart Delayed Start Control – this tool takes the overall temperature into consideration, and adjusts your heating schedule accordingly for minimum energy waste. It also stops the heater from kicking in the temperature is affected by a window or door being opened.
All three elements of an intelligent control system will systematically reduce energy consumption whilst ensuring your room is as cosy as possible during the colder months.
What does this mean for tubular heaters?
The introduction of Lot 20 is having a large impact on re-sellers and installers of electric space heaters. Many products will need to be re-imagined and re-designed, and companies will need to change their sales approaches accordingly. However – the legislation DOES NOT affect electric towel rails or electric tubular heaters.
EcoDesign Lot 20 will have a minimal impact on our specific industry niche, and therefore our customers will remain largely unaffected. It’s very much business as usual for We Are Tubular Heaters!
